Pickleball originated in the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when three friends sought to create a fun new game for their families. Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, they crafted a unique sport that could be enjoyed by players of all ages and skill levels. With a simple setup involving wooden paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a net, the game quickly gained popularity, spreading across the United States and beyond. What started as a casual backyard activity soon evolved into a thriving competitive sport, characterized by its lively gameplay and emphasis on community, making it a perfect fit for social interaction and fitness. Today, pickleball continues to flourish, bringing people together on courts like those at the Florence Oregon Pickleball Club.

At the Florence Oregon Pickleball Club, we pride ourselves on being more than just a community; we are a close-knit family connected by our shared enthusiasm for this dynamic sport. Whether you are picking up a paddle for the very first time or refining your skills for more competitive play, our inviting and inclusive atmosphere welcomes players of all abilities to dive into the excitement. Immerse yourself in the thrill of fast-paced matches, gain valuable insights and techniques from our experienced instructors, and build lifelong friendships both on and off the court. With our dedication to cultivating a nurturing environment, you will discover an ideal mix of challenge and camaraderie as you embark on your pickleball adventure with us along the breathtaking Central Oregon Coast.
Pickleball offers an exciting and engaging pathway to elevate both your physical fitness and mental wellness, making it a truly outstanding choice for individuals of all ages. This lively sport not only provides an excellent cardiovascular workout that invigorates your heart but also enhances your cognitive skills, ensuring that your mind remains sharp and responsive. Furthermore, pickleball encourages the maintenance of healthy joints and bolsters overall cardiovascular health, while also serving as a powerful means of relieving stress and promoting relaxation. In addition to these remarkable benefits, it facilitates enriching social interactions, cultivating a vibrant community where genuine friendships and connections can thrive among players, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

MARCH 2026 NEWSLETTER

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

2025 was an outstanding year for our club. Through active collaboration with the city and contractors, we successfully helped bring six permanent courts to completion at Rolling Dunes Park. In addition, several generous club members contributed funds to stripe two more courts at Florentine Estates—thank you to everyone who made that possible.

Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be another fantastic year on the courts.

Our 2nd Annual Club BBQ is just around the corner, and we have several ladder league events scheduled for those who enjoy a little friendly competition.

This year, we also plan to install power in our storage room, allowing us to conveniently charge our ball machine and leaf blower. The club has selected Selkirk pickleballs for use at Rolling Dunes due to their durability and one-year warranty—an upgrade that has already saved the club hundreds of dollars in replacement costs.

Please note: the Franklin balls stored in the equipment room are reserved exclusively for the ball machine, as using other types of balls can affect its performance.

We’re also grateful to the Mapleton Lions Club for generously providing access to their gym this winter, giving us a valuable indoor playing option. In return, club members have shown support through donations to their recent bingo fundraiser, which was greatly appreciated. If you’re able, consider contributing or attending one of their pancake breakfast fundraisers to show your support.

Please remember that use of the Mapleton gym is limited to club members, as our club provides the necessary insurance coverage.

Annual Meeting and Elections

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 27 for our annual meeting! We will be electing Board members at that meeting (President and Treasurer). If you are interested in running for office, please inform a current Board member.

SEASON KICK OFF BBQ, MEMBERSHIP DRIVE, AND PLAY DAY

Mark your calendar for Saturday, MAY 30TH 11am to 2 p.m for our Season Kick Off BBQ, Membership Drive, and Play Day! It will be held at Rolling Dunes Park. The club will provide hot dogs and hamburgers. Feel free to bring a side dish or dessert, but it’s not required.

Everyone in attendance will receive a Raffle Ticket for a chance to win Pickleball apparel and prizes. If you attended last year you know how much fun this event was!

Don’t forget your paddle as we will have open play throughout the day 😃 It’ll be a great way to socialize with your fellow players off the court and connect with those who play on different days or times.

Please feel free to bring family or maybe a friend who might be curious about this crazy fun game we play. It’ll be a great opportunity to introduce them to our Club! We will have Membership sign up sheets available for anyone who would like to join, and Michele (Treasurer) will be on hand to collect renewal dues for the 2026-2027 year.

Rolling Dunes Pickleball Club Court Ambassadors

Last summer, we appointed our Club Court Ambassador, Bob Severy, who welcomes both new and visiting players to Rolling Dunes. Bob assists newcomers in understanding our court racking system and club rules, and expresses our gratitude for donations supporting balls and other pickleball equipment. He is regularly present at Rolling Dunes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

We are currently seeking additional Court Ambassadors for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, as well as backup ambassadors. This role is an excellent opportunity to help build our club community and showcase the welcoming nature of our Pickleball members. We encourage members to consider serving as a court ambassador.

Additionally, all club members share responsibility for greeting visitors and providing guidance regarding court locations by experience, paddle rack usage, and our standard rules of play. Please make an effort to welcome guests, especially if you notice unfamiliar faces waiting to play.

Members arriving early are encouraged to assist by taking out the ball caddies as well as the four-place paddle holder inserts and donations box from storage. We are starting to have visiting players from out of town and this will only increase as Spring and Summer approach. We will receive more donations if we have our cute green pickle donation box hanging on the fence. 😃 It is customary when playing out of town to leave a donation and these donations are vital to our club. Thank You so much!

On-Court Coaching Tips

1. Overly Large Swing
One of the most frequent mistakes players make is taking too big of a swing. Focus on a controlled swing path that moves low to high which helps in generating topspin.

From the baseline (serves and drives), prepare with your paddle low and back, while keeping it within your peripheral vision.

In the transition zone, use a half swing or a controlled punch depending on the speed of the incoming ball.

At the net when receiving drives, keep your stroke short and compact—think of a punch or block rather than a full swing. This improves control (keep your opponent’s deep) and reduces your opponent’s reaction time.

2. Stop and Split-Step Before Contact
Movement and timing are critical for consistency. Many players try to hit while still moving, which leads to errors.

Come to a controlled stop and execute a split-step just before or as your opponent makes contact.

Read the ball early as it crosses the net, move to the correct position and stop, get set, take a breath, and then execute your shot.

This sequence promotes balance, control, and better shot execution.

3. Keep Your Opponent Deep
Controlling court position starts with depth on your serves and returns to apply pressure and maintain the advantage.

Serve: Target the back third of the court. Use core rotation, start your paddle path low, and finish high near your ear while keeping your head down through contact.

Return of Serve: Track the ball early, split step, set your shoulders and hips perpendicular to the net, and rotate through the shot with a low-to-high paddle path to create depth and consistency. Follow through in the direction you want the ball to go.

4. Be Consistent in the First Four Shots
Most points are decided within the first 4–5 shots, often due to unforced errors.

Prioritize getting the first four shots in play by focusing on control and intentional targeting. In is good

Make smart decisions: aim for your opponent’s backhand, inside (non-dominant) foot, or hip. By hitting good target, you create discomfort and force your opponent to move.

Emphasize control over power, shorter backswings lead to greater consistency and better decision making.

2026 Ladder League

We will be hosting up to 3 ladder leagues this summer. If we have 3 ladder leagues I will need some help, anyone interested email me at mailto:sandyandkeith4@gmail.com or text me at (541) 246-0843.

The first league will be the same as last year on Sundays.

In addition we will be adding an advanced league >3.5 and a beginner league < 3.5. These two leagues will work a little different – you will get a text or email on Sunday with the three people to play that week. The four players will set up where and when to play and email the scores by Friday.

Eye Safey

Eye protection is so important, but we often hear that protective eyewear is problematic in our humid coastal climate because lenses fog up easily. There’s a new manufacturer who makes LENS-FREE pickleball eyewear – it’s called Kitchen Blockers and you can find out about them at kitchenblockers.com. The Club is not endorsing or recommending this product, but if you’re in the market for safety eyewear, you should add it to the mix of options you investigate and consider.
