TYPES OF INJURIES WHILE PLAYING
Some common injuries that seniors can suffer while playing pickleball include:
Rotator cuff tear
The most common injury in pickleball, this can range from tendonitis to a full tear. It can cause shoulder pain, especially when moving or using the arm.
Ankle sprain
This can happen when the ligaments in the ankle are stretched or torn, often due to sudden changes in direction. Wearing shoes with good ankle support and doing balance exercises can help reduce the risk.
Plantar fasciitis
This overuse injury occurs when the plantar fascia, a band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed and strained.
Wrist injuries
Repetitive swinging and striking motions can cause wrist injuries. Wrist injuries can also occur when bracing for a fall or getting hit by a teammate’s paddle.
Knee injuries
These include sprains, strains, patellar tendonitis, meniscus tears, and ligament tears. They can occur from the sudden stops, pivots, and jumps required while playing.
Elbow injuries
Also known as tennis elbow, this can happen in pickleball, but it’s less common than in tennis. It’s usually tendinitis on the outside of the elbow and can be treated by taking a break from playing for a week or two.
Achilles tendinitis
This can result from quick changes in direction and explosive movements.
Shoulder injuries
These can occur from overuse, poor technique, or inadequate warm-up practices.
